Get Gardening: May To-Do List

Darin Engh, from Engh Gardens runs down the list of the May To-Do List.

" Turn sprinklers on. TIP Do not leave your automatic sprinklers at one setting all season. Run times should change every two weeks to reflect increasing heat temperatures.

" Do soil prep.

" Buy a plant for Mom

" Plant annuals and ENJOY THEIR COLOR: Marigolds, Petunias, Impatiens, Snapdragons, and Zinnias.

" Apply Weed & Feed to your lawn to control broadleaf weeds.

" Plant warm season veggies: cucumber, summer squash, winter squash, watermelon

" Plant new rose bushes.

" Plant summer blooming shrubs and vines: Lilacs, Clematis

" Plant trees.

" Plant permanent ground covers

" Keep garden well weeded and watered looking for signs of pest and diseases.

" Apply mulch to evergreens, shrubs, and trees to keep down weeds and conserve moisture.

" Avoid spraying fruit trees with insecticide until after the petals have dropped.

" Broad leaf evergreens such as Rhododendrons and Azaleas should be planted in early spring.

" Get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

" Keep up your weekly spray program for roses.

" Most spring blooming shrubs can now be pruned and shaped.

" Set tomato stakes before purring your plants in the garden.

" Fertilize and deadhead your repeat blooming roses after the flowers fade to encourage a second round in early summer. When applying granular fertilizer, avoid getting it on foliage to prevent fertilizer burn.

" This is the time to plant your containers of annual flowers to brighten your deck and patio.

" Hang baskets of begonias, fuchsias.
