Winners of "Truth From Youth" Announced

David Neville announced the winners along with Carver Iorg who earned the top prize in the contest.

" The eleven winners were honored with local school presentations in St. George, West Valley City, Richmond, Heber and other Utah locales. The students entered the contest by creating a radio, TV or billboard/poster advertisement depicting The TRUTH about the toxic effects of tobacco for the zombie-themed competition, entitled Give Us a Piece of Your Mind.

" Carver Iorg of Milford Elementary won top honors from among 8,279 entries for a radio ad about how a young person's social life can suffer when his parents smoke.

" Iorg was awarded Best of Show and will receive $400 in prize money.

" The TRUTH will award additional prizes for first, second place and third place in each entry category. Each winner also received a prize pack containing anti-tobacco-themed gear.

" The TRUTH Anti-tobacco Advertising Contest visited 106 elementary schools and interacted with nearly 10,000 students this year

" All these interactions add up to one powerful inoculation for youth against pervasive tobacco industry influences.

" The tobacco industry spends nearly $60 million each year in Utah seeking to addict new generations of tobacco users. UDOH and local health department efforts such as The TRUTH Contest have helped drive the youth smoking rate down by 34 percent since 1999. Ninety percent of adult smokers began lighting up before age 19 and one in three will eventually die of their addiction. For more information visit www.fighttheugly.com.
