These summer treats double as kid-friendly activities!

There’s one spot that always serves up the fun: the kitchen!

Alex Daynes turned the kitchen into a place of hands-on fun with three ideas that serve as edible entertainment. Whether you’re trying to beat the heat, fill a lazy afternoon, or just want to make some sweet memories with your little ones, Alex has curated a lineup of three delightful snack activities that double as kid-friendly kitchen experiments. These treats are simple, interactive, and best of all — delicious!

Farmer’s Market Lemonade

Alex’s Farmer’s Market Lemonade uses real lemons and your choice of seasonal fruit add-ins — think strawberries, blueberries, or even watermelon — to take your average lemonade to the next level. It’s a great way to let kids practice their smashing and shaking.

INGREDIENTS

For One Serving

  • 1 lemon, washed well and cut into small wedges
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup ice
  • 16 ounces of water
  • 32 Ounce Plastic Container with Lid
  • Ice

METHOD

  1. Muddle the lemon slices and sugar together in the plastic container until all the juice is released.
  2. Top with ice and water.
  3. Lock on the lid and shake until well incorporated and all the sugar dissolves. Enjoy!

Feel free to add other flavors to this by using the muddle to add other fresh fruits or using your favorite flavored drink syrups or creamers!

Ice Cream in a Bag

This cool science-meets-snacktivity lets kids make their own individual servings of ice cream using just a few ingredients and a bit of energy.

INGREDIENTS

For One Serving

  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 sandwich-sized ziplock bags
  • 1 gallon-sized ziplock bag
  • 1/3 cup ice cream, rock salt
  • 3 cups or more of ice

METHOD

  1. Add the heavy cream, half-and-half, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract to one of the sandwich Ziploc bags. Remove as much air as possible and seal the bag well. Double-bag it with another sandwich Ziploc bag.
  2. Add the ice cream into the gallon-sized ziplock bag with the ice and rock salt and seal the outer bag, pressing out as much extra air as possible.
  3. Shake the bag for 10 to 15 minutes, squishing and massaging the cream mixture in the middle to freeze it and turn it into ice cream.
  4. When the ice cream is ready, carefully open both the outside and inside bags, remove the ice cream bag, and be especially careful not to let any ice and salt mixture fall into the ice cream. Scoop it into bowls, top with your favorite ice cream toppings, and enjoy immediately.

Candy Necklaces

Using stretchy string and a mix of candies like Life Savers, gummy rings, and cereal loops, kids can design their own edible jewelry. This activity is perfect for all ages, and it’s just as fun to make as it is to munch on. It’s also a sweet way to sneak in a little hand-eye coordination and pattern-making practice.
