5-Minute Boosts for Your Summer Garden That Will Give it a Mid-Season Refresh

Refreshing your summer garden doesn’t have to take all day!

Gardening doesn’t have to take all day to make a big impact. In fact, just five minutes and a few clever tricks can give your plants the boost they need to thrive! Knowing what is needed for a quick refresh will keep your plants growing while you go on with the rest of your day.

From instant curb appeal to container cleanups, Jessica Berrett shared five-minute garden fixes for even the busiest schedule.

Pulling Weeds

  • Be more efficiently with the right tool
  • Make sure the soil is moist so the weeds will come out when pulled

Refreshing Containers & Flowerbeds

If plants are looking sad, there are a few options:

  • If annuals are alive but leggy and not blooming, and you are willing wait a couple weeks, trim them back to refresh them.
  • If they’re dead or you just want a quick fix, pick up some fresh annuals from the nursery and replace some plants in the pot.

Direct Sow Some Quick Growing Flowers

  • Zinnias – Fast, heat-loving, continuous blooms through fall if kept deadheaded
  • Cosmos – Tough, airy filler plants that thrive in heat and poor soil
  • Sunflowers (dwarf varieties) – Great for containers or flower bed gaps; try ‘Sunspot’, ‘Teddy Bear’, or ‘Big Smile’
  • Calendula – Reseeds, and blooms quickly

Refresh Herbs & Veggies

If herbs are getting long and scraggly, pinch them back to encourage new growth.

Direct Sow Seeds of Some Easy & Fast-Growing Varieties

  • Bush Beans – Quick to germinate, heat-loving, and productive within 50–60 days
  • Swiss Chard – Tolerates heat well, adds color, and keeps producing
  • Zucchini or Yellow Squash – If you have space, they grow fast and love heat
  • Basil – Germinates quickly, thrives in heat, and is a great filler in flower beds too
