Teaching big jobs to little people

But how do we get our kids to do these chores happily?

Sandra Phillips our Home and Family Efficiency specialist gives us some tips.

Let’s establish that it’s okay for kids to make messes. That’s how they experience the world around them and role play. It’s leaving the mess for someone else to clean up that sends the wrong message!

So how can we get our kids to clean up their own messes?

First, we don’t punish them with “Cleaning”—we need to make it a positive experience.
Next, Provide real tools—kid-sized if possible—that do big jobs! We also need to make things convenient to use.

What are the biggest cleaning jobs little kids can do?

I would say gathering trash and cleaning the toilets. But always pattern how these jobs should be done. You can not expect a child to know how to do something if you do not show them how.

If we teach our kids well, instead of WORK, every mess can be a Wonderful Opportunity for Responsible Kids.
