Spring cleaning boosts mental health! 4 surprising benefits of decluttering your life

Spring cleaning has more benefits than just a tidy home.

It’s a fun time of year to celebrate the transition… the start of spring. There is one spring tradition, though that some of us could likely do without. It turns out, however, spring cleaning has many more benefits beyond just a tidy and organized home. Decluttering and scrubbing baseboards can boost your energy, clear your mind, and give you the fresh, renewed feeling that you’re craving this time of year.

Professional cleaner Briana Lybbert shared a few cleaning benefits you probably didn’t realize.

The Science Behind Cleaning

Briana emphasized that the benefits of cleaning go beyond just having a tidy space. “The science behind cleaning is probably my favorite,” she said. “Having a clean home actually helps reduce contention and discord in the house, because no one feels good when things are messy.”

Physical and Financial Health

Cleaning doesn’t just improve your mental well-being. “Cleaning can improve your physical and your financial health,” Briana noted.

Simple tasks like replacing filters improves air quality and reduces your utility bills. “If you’re replacing your filters… you should be replacing them once a month… it will spare your HVAC system, it will keep it running longer, and your utility bill will come down,” Briana explained. She emphasized that if you take care of your appliances, like dishwashers and disposals, they will run better and last longer.

Symbolizing a Fresh Start

Spring cleaning symbolizes a fresh start, both physically and mentally. Briana advised starting small to avoid feeling overwhelmed. “Don’t try and bite off your entire house, your entire yard, everything. Start small.” she said. “That’s the challenge here. One drawer. Start with one drawer, see how good you feel after one drawer, and then move on to something else if you have time to do it.” Briana emphasized that you will probably get a lot further than you think.

Mental Health Benefits

One of the most significant benefits of cleaning is its impact on mental health. Research shows that mental health is  improved if we have a clean, tidy, organized space. Briana mentioned that exercise and getting out in the yard, in nature, and getting sunshine also bring happiness and calm.

Creating a Calm and Balanced Space

A clean and organized space can reduce anxiety and stress. Briana suggested creating one peaceful area in your home to start. “Get one space in your house that makes you feel comfortable… your own little corner.”

She said to find a place other than your bed. “ Bed is for sleep only… Find a corner. Find a nook, a floor, and it has to be clean and peaceful so you at least have your own little serenity for the moment.”
