Marie Ricks with House of Order shares some great ideas about making storage out of your unused space.

1) When searching for additional storage space, look:
a) Above
b) Along
c) Behind
d) Under
2) Above the tops of kitchen cupboards. Above the shelving in bedroom closets. Above the vehicles in the garage. Above the beds.
a) Store light, bulky things here
b) Use hooks for hanging some items
c) Add another ½ shelf up high for smaller items in closets
d) Use decorative containers for above kitchen cupboards
3) Along a wall.
a) Store long-term items in stacked boxes, buckets, or plastic containers. Label each container, stack four-six high, cover with a quilt, and make good use of this “dead” space.
4) Behind other sturdy items or behind other storage.
a) Store larger, thinner visual aids behind the piano. Use a folded piece of sturdy cardboard to contain and keep these items safe and in good condition.
b) Store smaller items in the back parts of cupboards and cabinets using plastic containers. It is easy to retrieve the container and makes double use of this space. (Darin: This is when we will show the “opening” table and how to use containers to store items on shelves.)
c) Store ironing boards behind the door with a simple hook attached to the wall.
e) Use coat hooks on a children’s bedroom wall to make dressing easier. One hook for their coat, one for their pajamas, one for their school clothes, and a fourth for their play clothes.
4) Under pieces of furniture for long, flat items.
a) Store unused blankets under the mattress.
b) Store extra poster board under the coach.
c) Store Christmas decorations under the bed.
d) Store …. under the area rug … well, what would YOU put under the rug?
