Decorated Gingerbread Cookies


1 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup molasses
2 eggs
1/2 cup warm water
2 cups whole wheat flour
4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
Frosting and candies for decorating
Milk for enjoying


Beat together sugar and softened butter; beat in molasses and eggs. Measure water in molasses cup and swish to rinse down sides; add water to sugar and eggs and beat.

Measure whole wheat and all-purpose flour into a medium bowl; add salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and ginger. Stir dry ingredients into sugar and eggs; mix well.

Divide dough in half; wrap each half in plastic wrap and refrigerate 2-4 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Roll dough out on lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Dip cookie cutters in flour, shake off excess flour and cut dough into desired shapes. Place on un-greased cookie sheet. Bake 9-12 minutes or until lightly browned on bottom. Remove to cooling rack to cool. Decorate with favorite frosting and candies.

Makes approximately 3 dozen 5-inch gingerbread men.

Enjoy with a cold glass of milk.
