Eliminate Under-Eye Bags With a New Laser Procedure

Dr. Justin Johnsen, an oculoplastic surgeon at Utah Eye and Facial Plastic Surgery talks about ways to eliminate bags or circles under your eyes.

Johnsen says, “As we age, the structure (orbital septum) that holds the fat pads in place loosens and becomes lax. This allows the fat pads to protrude forward, giving that extra fullness or bags under the eyes. This generally makes you look a lot older and more tired. If the problem persists, it can lead to lower eyelid droopiness, significantly dry eyes and the inability to close your eyes completely.”

The procedure, called a Lower Lid Blepharoplasty (Lower Lid Bleph), makes a small incision just under the lashes in the eyelid crease, or on the underneath side of the eyelid to help minimize the appearance of scars. The extra fat and skin tissue is removed, and the incision is closed. The result is a patient who generally looks younger and more relaxed.

Johnsen doesn’t use traditional surgical tools for his procedures. He’s one of the only Utah plastic surgeons to use a carbon dioxide laser, which helps reduce recovery time and bruising. “With this surgery, there can be some mild bruising which can last up to a week, but usually people can return to work and normal activity in just a few days. There is usually very little discomfort other than occasional itching or crusting of the wound,” says Johnsen.

For a limited time, Johnsen is offering free consultations to prospective clients. Normally, consultations cost $100.

Johnsen, a Utah native, obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah. He then attended medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and completed a fellowship in Michigan with Dr. Thomas Spoor, a surgeon with 25 years of experience in optic nerve and oculoplastic surgery. After a few years in North Carolina as an associate professor at Duke University, Johnsen and his wife chose to move back to Utah to raise their children near their extended family.
