Do Fall Denim Right: How to incorporate 5 styles into your closet

Time to pull out the fall denim.

If you’ve been shopping lately, or even done a little scrolling, you will have noticed that the denim world is evolving at a seriously fast pace. With new cuts and washes, you may feel like you’re always trying to just keep up,

Studio 5 Style & Fashion Contributor Casey Matheny breaks down the current fall denim styles to keep you in the know as you pull out your old jeans and maybe, shop for some new pairs as well.

Long and Loose: Keep it Casual

The first cut of fall denim is the long and loose. We’ve been seeing this style for the last year, ever since skinny jeans left.

“These came in and they are just baggier. Sometimes they’re lower slung, which I don’t think you have to do,” Casey explained. A mid or even a high rise works.

They’re comfortable, long, and not cropped. “It’s just very casual. There’s no need to dress this up,” Casey emphasized.

When it comes to shoes, Casey said you can choose sneakers or boots, but don’t think too much about it. “I think people stress themselves out when it comes to shoes… and don’t,” she stressed.

Dark Indigo: The Classy Choice

The next category is dark indigo. “It’s so classy, it just feels very elevated and put together,” Casey said. Dark indigo denim is perfect for wearing jeans to work, but keeping it dressy. This raw, dark blue denim option is sophisticated and versatile.

Pairing an indigo bottom with an indigo jacket creates a cohesive, polished look. ” I do love a Canadian tuxedo where you’ve got denim jacket on top and denim on bottom,” Casey said. “I would just say, make sure that it’s not a very high contrast. Keep them basically the same color denim.”

Winter White: Chic and Sophisticated

“I love a winter white,” Casey said. Contrary to the old rule that white denim should be avoided after Labor Day, winter white can be incredibly chic. “When they say white denim has to go after Labor Day… I will fight that to the death.”

Pairing white jeans with an ivory sweater creates a monochromatic look that is both forgiving and stylish. “I love a more canvas color and off white. It’s just more forgiving and easier to style too,” Casey emphasized.

Mixed Material: Boho Vibes

Mixed material denim, often seen in patchwork designs, brings a boho vibe to your wardrobe. “It does feel very Free People, Anthro-esque,” Casey described. This style may not be for everyone, but it’s a fun way to add some flair to your denim collection.

Slim Stovepipe: The Modern Classic

The slim stovepipe jean is a modern classic that flatters most body types. “I do love a very slim straight leg pant,” Casey said. ” I think it’s just really flattering on majority of bodies.”

You can choose to cuff them or let them break at the bottom. “I still love a cropped pant, but it’s also very current and a little trendy for it to be a full length even with a little break,” Casey explained.

Boots and Hemlines

“When we are doing boots, I don’t want the bottom of the hem to compete with the top of the boot,” Casey explained. The key to pairing jeans with boots is to ensure that one element is either wider or more narrow.

“I personally love a tighter boot,” Casey said. “That’s going to hug your ankle and that this pant can flow out on the outside of the boot.”
