Fall Fashion: The High’s and Low’s Worth Having

Studio 5 Contributor ShaLyse Walker breaks down the high’s and low’s of trends worth having this season.

As the days grow shorter, kids trudge back to school, and warm days turn brisk, there’s always one thing a girl can look forward to–fall fashion! Summed up, the major trends for this season are structured, military-inspired pieces with touches of feminine lace detail. Here are our top picks that every woman should snag to stay ‘on the ball’ in the fall:

Military Cargo Pant or Sgt. Pepper-Inspired Jacket
You may be thinking, “military?” Do not fear. While this season’s designs stem from a menswear look, they’re streamlined and tailored to fit a woman’s body. A cropped or skinny military pant makes for a fabulous alternative to jeans. A Sgt. Pepper-inspired jacket looks tough, yet structured and classy; and who wouldn’t love all the button, pocket, and seam details that come with all things military? Treat these pieces like basics. They truly work with almost anything in your closet, and their masculinity looks perfect when balanced with feminine touches like lace.

Lace Detailed Tops
Lace, lace, lace! It’s everywhere! Wear this trend by choosing a solid top with subtle lace details, or really go for it by wearing a solid lace blouse. If you’re feeling really brave, try a lace legging with a knit dress. It’s hard to resist the free and easy feel of these pieces in any color. Balance the lace with a structured military pant or jacket to perfect the look. You’ll feel tough and girly at the same time.

Chambray Blouse
The industrial, classic chambray button-down is back in a big way this fall. It combines the casual, laid-back look of denim with the professional, put-together feel of a work blouse. Don’t shy away from wearing a light chambray shirt with dark denim, or even better, pair it with a lady-like pencil skirt. It’s unexpected, but works fantastically.

Structured Pencil Skirt
Here’s another way to interpret the utilitarian look. This season’s pencil skirts are decked with buttons and seams. This body-conscious look flatters your curves when worn with a fitted blouse, jacket, or long-sleeved tee. Pair it with flat boots for every day, or throw on a sky-high heel for a retro, vintage “va-va-voom” feel. You can’t go wrong.

Because most of these pieces have a utilitarian feel, mixing and matching them is a no-brainer and makes for an array of combinations to keep you looking great all season. Throw the lace top on with the military pant. Wear the chambray shirt under the Sgt. Pepper-inspired jacket, or even better, tuck it into the pencil skirt to toughen up its femininity. The good news: you can find these trends anywhere from Nordstrom and Anthropologie to Target and Forever 21. Whether splurging or saving, anyone can snag these four main trends to update their closet. We found looks for high and low prices everywhere!
