1. No blue jeans to dinner.
Black jeans are okay. There are many other options to choose from that are casual and comfortable and fun, but look a little dressier. If you must wear jeans wear a darker wash, and dress them up with a great jacket.
2. Don’t try to compete with the 20-year-olds. (no matter how great you look!)
The 20 year olds always win. If you are shopping in the same stores that your daughter or granddaughters are shopping in you may want to reevaluate your wardrobe choices. There are great choices out there for women over fifty that are fun and young looking, but are more age appropriate. A woman between 40 and forever looks great because she has style not because she shows off her body.
3.Don’t revisit a trend from your past.
There is a difference between a fad and a trend. Women over fifty should fill their wardrobe with the classics; however, without a few of the current trends we would look like we were stuck in a time warp. Be careful what trends you follow. For instance, the popular legging look would be a good style to skip. Belts are also big this fall not a bad trend to follow if you look good in belts. Swing coats are popular—a fun look and also age appropriate.
4. Wear simple accessories, and keep your look clean.
Accessories range from hats to belts to shoes to handbags and everything in between. Accessories are meant to complement the outfit, not to overwhelm. What’s too much? It depends on the outfit. If you are wearing a beaded top, skip the necklace go for a bracelet and earring. Depending on your size you need to watch the scale of your handbag and your jewelry.
5. No miniskirts.
A short skirt that covers the knee is okay. They make a great skirt they call a flirt skirt that has a more appropriate look for our age. There are great length options now. Truly, no minis after the age of thirty!
