Gingerbread Cookie Ornaments

2/3 C. margarine
1/2 C. granulated sugar
1/2 C. brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 C. molasses
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 C. flour

1. Cream together margarine and sugars. Add egg, molasses, soda, salt, and
spices. Stir in the flour and mix well.

2. Let dough chill in refrigerator for several hours. Roll dough out onto a
lightly floured surface and using Christmas cutters, cut shapes.

3. Place cookies onto a greases cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 10
minutes. If making cookies into edible ornaments, immediately after removing
from oven, press a drinking straw though the top of each cookie and make a
hole, at least 1/2 inch from edge of cookie.

4. String each cookie ornament with ribbon, raffia, or jute for hanging. Plaid
ribbon looks nice with these cookies. Decorate the cookies with Royal Icing
(icing that hardens) if desired.
Royal Icing:
3 egg whites
1 lb. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

To make icing, mix ingredients and beat with an electric mixer on high speed
for 7-10 minutes. Keep covered to prevent drying.
