Give your closet a wardrobe detox! 7 pieces to get rid of right now

Now is a great time to go on a wardrobe detox!

Spring is the ideal time for a fresh start, including in your closet!

Studio 5 Style & Fashion Contributor Casey Matheny shared seven things to toss out this spring. These are items taking up valuable space that just aren’t serving you, and she promises you won’t miss these once they’re gone!

Outdated Fast Fashion Trends

Casey said to get rid of things like super long cardigans and ultra-distressed denim. “ You got them maybe a year ago or two years ago, and you’re just like… ‘no one’s wearing these anymore,'” she emphasized.  These pieces were trendy but fleeting—keep your wardrobe feeling fresh with longer-lasting silhouettes and styles!

Worn-Out Basics

If you have pilling t-shirts, stretched-out tanks, or yellowing white tees, it’s time to refresh them! “You want them to look sharp and nice,” Casey said. Basics are essential—but if they’re dingy or tired, they drag your whole look down. Replace them with crisp, quality versions.

Shoes That Hurt (and You Never Wear)

Heels you *wish* were comfortable, flats with worn soles… just a few examples of shoes you can clean out of your closet. “ Being honest with yourself on,’ yes, I love these. Maybe I even spend a lot of money on these, but in my phase of life right now, I’m not wearing them like I once did’ or ‘I can’t wear them because they hurt,'” Casey said.  If you’re not reaching for them, they’re taking up space. Invest in stylish comfort instead.

Pieces That Don’t Fit (and Haven’t in Years)

Those jeans you haven’t buttoned since 2021, that “goal” dress… dress the body you have now. “ You’re not doing yourself any favors by holding onto them,” Casey emphasized. “And honestly, they’re making it feel like you have more items in your closet than you actually do, and they don’t fit you.” Donate or store sentimental items elsewhere—but don’t let them take up valuable real estate in your closet!

Duplicates of the Same Item

You don’t need six black v-neck tees, or five nearly identical gray sweaters. Pick your top two and let the rest go. “ There’s someone else who can use them and they’re just hanging up, taking up that space in your closet,” Casey said. Too many of the same thing clutters your options and stifles creativity.

Trendy Prints You’re Over

Loud leopard, tie-dye, and overly bold florals (especially if they feel “2020”) are some patterns that are getting old. “ These are older, trendy prints,” Casey emphasized. Print fatigue is real. If you haven’t worn it in two spring seasons, it’s time.

Anything That Makes You Feel “Meh”

Casey said to ditch dresses you never feel quite right in, “just okay” blouses, and anything too fussy. Your clothes should make you feel confident—not just dressed. And, getting dressed shouldn’t feel like a chore! Enjoy what you wear

Bonus Tip: Create a “Maybe” Bin

For those items you’re unsure about—store them in a bin for 30 days. If you don’t reach for them, it’s time to let them go.
