How to Make a Personal-Size Pinata With a Cereal Box & Tissue Paper

A personal-size pinata is a unique way to give a gift!

Nothing gets the party going quite like a piñata. It’s colorful, chaotic fun—and now, thanks to DIY-er Emily Price, it’s also personal-sized! This mini version turns the classic party accessory into something even sweeter.

These tiny piñatas are cute, crafty, and totally doable. You don’t need fancy tools or hours of time—just some tissue paper and an empty cereal box. Make one for a birthday party favor, a fun place setting, or even as a unique way to wrap a small gift.

How to Make a Mini Piñata

SUPPLIES

  • An empty cereal box or thin cardboard
  • Tissue paper in fun colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or glue dots
  • Tape
  • String or ribbon (optional, for hanging)
  • Candy, confetti, money, or a note to go inside

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut Your Shape
Use your cereal box to cut out two identical shapes—hearts, stars, circles, or even mini tacos! These will be the front and back of your piñata. Cut a long strip (about 1.5–2 inches wide) to wrap around the edge and form the sides.
  2. Build the Base
Use tape to attach the long strip around the edges of one shape, bending as needed to follow the outline. Then tape the second shape on top—like a cardboard sandwich.
  3. Leave a Trap Door
Before sealing completely, leave a small flap or opening you can use to stuff the piñata later. This is your candy-access point!
  4. Cut Your Fringe
Fold tissue paper and snip fringe along one edge. You’ll want enough to layer around the entire surface of the piñata.
  5. Decorate
Glue your fringe strips around the piñata, starting at the bottom and layering up. Go wild with colors or follow a fun pattern!
  6. Fill It Up
Once decorated, use the flap to fill your mini piñata with small treats, confetti, or a personal note. Tape it shut.
  7. Add Details
Optional: Add googly eyes, stickers, a name tag, or punch a hole and tie on ribbon to hang it up.
