Use one of these neutrals as your new black.
Spring fashion is often all about the colorful pastels, but we’re going to focus on neutral shades that will keep you looking classy all season long. As fashion evolves, so do our wardrobes, and if you’re getting tired of black being your go-to neutral, these colors work just as well, if not better.
Studio 5 Style & Fashion Contributor Casey Matheny shared a few fresh neutrals that offer the same versatility as black in a modern way.
The Timeless Appeal of Black
Black has been a staple in our wardrobes for years. “If you don’t know what to wear, wear black,” Casey said. It has a slimming effect and can be paired with almost anything. However, black isn’t always the best color for all undertones, so here’s a round up of Casey’s favorite alternative neutrals.
Chocolate Brown
One neutral that Casey really likes is chocolate brown. ”This chocolate brown is all over. The deep espresso and… these really deep chocolatey colors,” she noted.
This shade is flattering on warmer skin tones and is an updated look from what we saw in the early 2000’s. “It just feels more rich,” Casey added. “ It just softens and it also feels more springy.”
Navy
Navy is another great substitute for black. It’s works for both day and night outfits, and can be dressed up or down. Casey loves navy because, “it’s just a little softer than black and just as easy.”
The big question, however, is whether navy can be paired with black. “ You either love it or you don’t,” Casey said. “I love doing black and navy… it feels intentional.”
Olive Green
Olive green is a great earthy tone that works well in lots of pieces, from sweaters to trousers. “ You can, you can do a lot with an olive green,” Casey said.
While it may seem more appropriate for fall, she suggested pairing it with white to brighten it up for spring. “You pair anything with a white and it’s just going to pop more and feel a little bit more fresh,” she advised.
Beige and Taupe
Beige and taupe give the look of quiet elegance. “You can throw on a taupe or a camel coat… and it’s just gonna pop and elevate it.” These shades warm up your outfit and are good colors for transitioning into the warmer seasons.
Gray
Gray is emerging as a new favorite neutral. “It’s different, but just as easy to style,” Casey said. “ You can get warmer tones of gray, you can get cooler tones of gray, so it can work for all undertones.”
It’s a fresh alternative to black and can be paired with bright colors and pastels for a modern look. “Instead of doing all black, try all gray,” she suggested.
Try swapping out black in your closet for an alternative. Experiment with new neutrals and find what works best for you!
