Product Picks for a Squeaky Clean Shower

The problem is, it’s hard to find a product that really works. So we asked for some expert advice on which products really work.

Christa Ostler Owner of Daisy Maids, a local cleaning service, has spent thousands of hours cleaning houses, and she knows what it takes to get a squeaky clean shower. We asked her to share some of her secrets.

There are a few products we like for different purposes but ultimately its the “tricks” and tools that make the job easier.

The most common problems in a shower or tub are hard water & soap-scum. For these we mainly use Soft Scrub because it is gentle and will not scratch. For tough build up on glass doors or porcelain tubs we use Comet(or Ajax etc). The trick is mainly in the process. We put a small amount of the product inside a large “big gulp” cup and add about 1/3 cup of warm water. Use a scouring pad to mix & apply the combination to the surface you wish to clean and scrub in a circular motion. The toughest part of cleaning a shower is rinsing the walls where the shower head won’t reach so after the entire surface has been cleaned, we use the large cup to thoroughly rinse the entire shower by filling it with water and pouring it over the surfaces. This eliminates the white film we sometimes get after cleaning the shower. To avoid streaks towel dry. (I should mention that Daisy Maids also uses a commercial grade product that is not available to the public to clean the really stubborn build up.)

Many showers have mold or mildew. For this we like to use a small amount of Clorox Clean-Up. It comes in a spray bottle so you can apply it directly to the problem areas, scrub with a scouring pad, and rinse with a large cup. You can also buy Soft Scrub with bleachif it is a persistent problem – or if you just like to clean with bleach – and follow the directions I mentioned above. Be sure to rinse thoroughly after using either product! Again to avoid streaks, towel dry.

If your shower is made of marble, travertine or another soft stone you do not want to use ANY of the previous products. It may dull the finish or damage the stone. For these we use a natural product call Simple Green. You may apply it by spray bottle or combine a few tablespoons with 1/3 cup of warm water in a large cup and use your scouring pad or a wash rag to apply. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry.
