Those surveyed used women such as Courtney Cox and Katie Holmes as the ultimate example of shiny strands. So what are the shine secrets that can protect your hair from winter wear?
Stylist Omar Mendez with Studio Nine Salon, separates the Wives’ Tales from the Truths.

There are many home remedy-suggestions, or “wives tales,” on how to achieve shiny hair. Three of the most common suggestions are a Beer Shampoo, Vinegar Rinse and a Cold Water Rinse.
The Shine Secret: Wives Tales or Truth?
Beer Shampoo or Rinse
Beer is a natural remedy for dry, dull hair and is best used as a hair rinse. Beer contains a protein that helps fill in the voids to this dry hair. Shampoo your hair with your normal shampoo and then pour a beer over your hair from scalp to ends. Let it “condition” on your hair for a few minutes and then rinse with cool water (cool water will also help the odor of the beer).
Vinegar
Vinegar will remove build up and residue from the hair and closes the cuticle. When the cuticle is closed, it will give the hair more shine as the light will better reflect off the strands. The type of vinegar I recommend is apple cider vinegar. Vinegar helps
keep long hair de tangled, as the cuticle will be flat. Once you have applied the vinegar to your hair rinse with cool water.
Cold Water Rinses
Cool water rinses are very good for your hair as this will help close the cuticle on the hair, giving you “shiny” hair and also help minimize tangling. After you step out of the shower, towel dry your hair. Try not to rub, but instead use more of a patting technique as to not rough up the hair. As far as temperature goes, make it as cool as you can handle (thought not freezing cold).
Bottom Line: While all of these treatments may provide some noticeable difference, you will get better results with the shampoos and conditioners of today.
The Shine Secret: What Really Works
Current products can help you achieve the shine and bounce you want your hair to have. If you’re looking for added moisture and shine, try a deep conditioning treatment, available at most salons.
When it comes to product, my two favorites “shine products” are:
Silk Degrees Demi- Permanent Shine Treatment
by Pravana.
This product works on new technology called nanotechnology, meaning that it is working with smaller molecules to help go deeper into the hair shaft. This product contains a special blend of proteins and silk infused silicones to give a deep and long lasting conditioning treatment.
The Five Step Treatment
by L’anza.
This conditioning treatment is a five step process that restores luster and health to the hair. It also uses proteins to help with the health of the hair.
