Taking better Halloween Pictures

Photographer, Shannon Lowe says it’s all about telling the story of your Halloween adventures and she is here to show us how to do just that.

Five easy tips for improving your Halloween photos:

1. Fill the frame. Before shooting, ask yourself, “What is the point of interest in this image?” Then zoom in or move in as close as possible to really show off your subject. If you are shooting a group of people, have them move in as close as possible.

2. Eliminate distracting backgrounds. When you rush to quickly snap a photo, you don’t notice the background. When there are distracting things in the photo, the subject becomes lost. By eliminating those things, it allows your subject to pop.

3. Use props and setting to evoke a feeling. For example, place a “pirate” in front of water or give them a sword. Place a “vampire” or “witch” by an old dead tree, or by something spooky. Get creative and learn to “see” the possibilities around you. This makes a huge difference in evoking a feeling.

4. Shoot at twilight, or at least, out of direct sunlight. Place your subjects under the shade of a large tree, or under an awning if needed. It eliminates harsh shadows and allows you to use natural light versus the flash. For a spooky effect, have your subject hold a candle or flashlight shining upward, right underneath their face.

5. Take tons of photos! Take pictures of jack-o-lanterns, decorations, the gigantic bowl of candy, a big tray of caramel apples or Halloween cookies – anything and everything that says “Halloween” to you. The more photos you take, the better your chances of getting that perfect shot!
