A Campus Craft & Floral favorite technique is using wheat, twigs, or fall foliage to create a seasonal centerpiece. These wonderful show-stopping arrangements can be made to any size and with flowers from your garden or local floral shop. You can even use the same principles to create a permanent fall decoration by using silk or dried flowers.
SUPPLIES:
-Any water-tight container.
(A 5×3″ clear vase works wonderfully. You could also use a drinking glass or an empty juice concentrate container)
-2 rubber bands
-Water
-Enough fresh fall flowers to fill your vase
(Chrysanthemums, carnations, dahlias, marigolds, or zinnias work wonderfully. Pre-made mixed bouquets are perfect for this project, as well.)
INSTRUCTIONS:
-Place your two rubber bands around your vase. One 1.5″ from the top and the other 1.5″ from the bottom. Slide the wheat stems under the rubber bands with the top of the wheat just inches above the rim of your vase. Cover the entire base of your container with the wheat.
-Group your fall flower bouquet (any assortment of your choice) in your hand. Cut short enough that the flowers rest right about the wheat tips.
-Tied a seasonal ribbon around the wheat base to cover your rubber bands.
Note: This project can be adapted to suit any season or centerpiece need. Try covering your container with twigs, pussy willows is the spring, horsetail grass for a more contemporary or tropical feel, ornamental grasses, etc.
