The Christmas Challenge: Decorating with Pinecones

Jennifer Heslop had some creative ideas, and even has the technique for how to scent your own pinecones and how to make pinecone firestarters.

Scented Pinecones

1. Rinse pinecones with water. Lay pinecones on a foil covered cookie sheet and place in a 300 degree F oven for one hour. Remove from oven and check to make sure cones are completely dry before proceeding to step 2.

(To use ground spices)

2. Blend spices (cinnamon & nutmeg work well) in small dish. Add a little glitter to the mix for sparkle. Using a small brush, paint tips of pinecones with white glue. Sprinkle pinecone with spice mixture.

Or

(Using scented oil)

2. Place pinecones in plastic bag. Add a few drops of scented oil. Shake bag to distribute oil on cones. Seal bag and allow to sit overnight.

1. Spray muffin tins with non-stick cooking spray. Place approx. 4 inches of wick in each tin. Make sure wick hangs over the side of tin. Cover bottom of each tin with crushed leaves or desired material.

2. Melt wax in double boiler. If desired, add scented oil or coloring to wax (a candle stub works well to add color). Pour wax into each tin. The wax base should be about 1- inch thick. Immediately set a pinecone on top of wax.

3. Allow wax to set and then pop out each fire starter.

4. To use- place a fire starter in between logs. Light wick.
