Here’s some tips about getting your garden in order for the winter:
1. Annuals – Rip them out. You add instant cleanliness to the bed. (Pull out annuals and smooth over dirt)
2. Perennials – Energy in roots. Prune down. Clean out. (Cut down perennial, clean out another)
3. Shrubs – Clean out. Open up. Go over blooming times which alter pruning times – “Take note of when your shrubs bloom if you don’t already know. If they bloomed already in the summer, prune them now. If they will bloom in the spring, wait and prune them after they bloom. Otherwise you’ll cut off their already forming buds.” (Do a few cleaning out chops on the shrub).
4. Mulch, cultivate and prep – Now is a great time to prepare your soil for your plants to take off in the spring. Mulch it, cultivate it, incorporate oxygen from a summer of compaction and spread your nutrients. (throw in some mulch and cultivate). Some tender shrubs and perennials will need some extra mulch on top of them or surrounding the base for extra insulation. (mulch – any kind of leaves, shredded bark, compost)
5. Bulbs – Prepare your beds to put on a show when the snow’s gone. (plant some bulbs at a 4″ depth.) Come to The Garden Lodge and mention Studio 5 spot and you’ll get 15% off your Spring bulbs. “Try to get this all done before November (the first frost) and have everything put to bed so you can focus on the Holiday.”
• Amaryllis: “Enjoy colorful flowers during Christmas”
1. “Amaryllis if planted now will bloom before Christmas and will most likely continue to bloom through June. ”
2. You can work with different sized Amaryllis and and there will be a difference in splendor. “Just place in a sunny location in your home and cut off spent blooms.”
3. “Come in and get some that are already planted or buy and plant your own. These make such great gifts!!! ”
