The Swanky Isis: Kid’s Holiday Fashion

Natalie Lawrence and Laci Davis are co-founders of The Swanky Isis, a children’s fashion & trends blog. They share three different holiday looks.

TIMELESS & TRADITIONAL

The holidays are all about tradition, so why not reflect that standard in your style? There are two ways to pull off a timeless and traditional look: color and pattern. When selecting a color, play basic: black, white, red, green and silver. Keep in mind, any hue of these colors will work. Stay away from the chimney red and kelly green and opt for a softer or brighter shade. Plaid patterns are a great way to embrace a more traditional look but, again, mix up the colors just a bit. Even a timeless style has room for surprise! If you choose to go extremely traditional, shell out the cash. It is more fun to stick with the traditional colors in unique styles.

If you go extremely traditional (i.e. a plaid dress) don’t shell out the cash. It is more fun to stick with the traditional colors in unique styles. Look for those seasonal colors in something like the Tralala Holiday line in red and cream toile. Go for the “sisters” look with a princess like dress adorned with tuelle and ruffled swing set for baby sister both from fun posh new children’s store at Day Break, Oopsie Daisy. (Tralala Dress $58.00; Tralala Swing Set $72.00)

Find deep, rich red tones in all hues such as the Shabby Apple Cranberry (www.shabbyapple.com $48.00). You’ll achieve a holiday feel through the cranberry shade, yet have a fancy dress you can wear more than just for the holidays.

For that little guy, you can still buy a basic red tie, but give it a punch with a black shirt and better yet, one with a pattern. We paired the Peanut Posh Mr. Claus tie. (www.store.peanutposh.com $13).

Go for that less traditional dress, filled with holiday colors of warm neutrals and a deep red floral print with green leaves. We married soft cream to Rozzi’s Sweet Peas “Sigourney” dress to complete our mountain retreat seasonal look. (www.etsy.com $34)

FESTIVE & FUNKY

Set your own traditions, with your own sassy style! The sky is the limit. Go with what you love – there is no limit to color, layers or play. Texture is a great way to incorporate that funky feel. Look for detail – buttons, ruffles, pleats and layers that will add extra interest. Make sure fashion meets function – don’t embrace a trend that is itchy or uncomfortable. Trust us – not worth the battle (or the tantrums!).

The Swanky Isis has found a new favorite online boutique specializing in finding the looks you see on your favorite celebrities’ kids. (www.starlooksboutique.com $89.95) Their custom made, lined boy’s blazer in rich olive corduroy with brass buttons is fun and funky, but functional both for the season and throughout the cold months.

Persnickety (www.persnicketyclothing.com $37.99 top, $32.99 skirt and $24.99 ruffle pant) provides comfort while putting the “fun” in funky. The green pants could be paired with just the shirt, the shirt could be worn two ways, the skirt can be long and probably last two seasons due to the fabulous options you have with leggings and ruffle pants underneath. Not to mention the great buy one, give one concept where Persnickety will donate one piece of clothing for each one you purchase.

Go for leopard! It’s great for any occasion! Brats in Bountiful and Logan (brick and mortar Dress $39.99) allows you to skew toward festive formal, yet maintain a unique look with its green scrunchy bubble bottom.

Peanut Posh (store.peanutposh.com $32.00) takes your hip tie to an even cooler level with its polka dot bowtie. Pair it with gray to make it “pop”.

Local to Utah, Freshly Picked (freshlypicked.blogspot.com Skirt $25.00) ruffle skirt is an instant eye catcher. You’ll use this pastel blue skirt (also available in other colors) clear through next summer. The Swanky Isis paired it with red to make it a true winter wonderland meets Christmas.

Just Be is a company of mothers, daughters, sisters and friends intertwined and connected through pieces of fabric. (www.justbeonline.com) Also local to Utah, Just Be is a company that is committed to giving back. We love there concept and the skirts are killer and very unique!

HANDMADE & CREATIVE

At The Swanky Isis, we are all about supporting our local crafting moms. There are benefits to skipping the national chain stores: you won’t see yourself as often, and the looks are more unique and custom.

Vanilla Pie onesies and tshirts are all the rage right now. We love the cute fun designs (www.etsy.com) Not only are the capitalizing on the big ruffle trend right now but they are very well made.

We love Rocks n Rags Boy Onesie (www.etsy.com ) They took this look a step further with the sewed on Vest and tie.

RaeGun’s loves combining elements of classic and retro fashion with a sensibility towards today’s families. She hand makes each item making them stylish enough for lunch with the aunties while at the same time being comfortable and durable enough for an afternoon at the park. We love her Candy cane ruffle Diaper cover it makes a great and comfortable statement! ($12.50, raegun.etsy.com) Add some warm tights and your good to go. Were not hiding this diaper cover!

Fashion Bloomers by RaeGun would be darling peeking out under a dress or used as a pant. ($12.50 raegun.etsy.com) Remember to hold on to them for Valentine’s Day! Angel wings by Zozobugbaby is a dress that will make a great Christmas statement! And stand out look for any Christmas occasion and very fitting for your little angel ($65.00 www.etsy.com)

Patchwork skirt and ruffle top by Zozo are a darling set. The patchwork skirt of untraditional colors is entitled “Candy Shoppe.” It will be perfect for the holidays and if you’re the sewing type you can purchase product or pattern! ($25.00 www.etsy.com)

Sweet Marguerite Cream Pom Pom Tutu ($55.00 www.etsy.com) is a knock out beautiful classic look. You can wear this all year long. You won’t be disappointed with this high end look! It’s a Swanky Isis favorite!

Vintage Cape Coat ($35.00)Get the most bang for your buck! Conceptually, they wanted to make something that you get the most bang for your buck (especially with how quick kids go through clothes), and the cape coat style automatically lends itself to the reversible concept (hence getting two coats for one). The kids’ cape coat is a fun sweater alternative for the winter. The style and fabrics lends themselves to be dressed up or down (once again increasing the practicality of the coat.

Lou and Lee headbands ($ 15.00 www.etsy.com) are twins and we love to make things and be creative. They created The Original Felt Headband that is HAND MADE AND HAND CUT. We love all Ann’s unique headband designs and the way she mixes funky and vintage in her designs. Also check out her fashionable blog at www.auntie-ann.blogspot.com

ABOUT THE SWANKY ISIS

We developed The Swanky Isis because as mothers ourselves, we feel there isn’t another concept like it; a one-stop fashion hub full of affordable and hip ideas for dressing your kid(s).

We know anyone can click on or walk into a store and be inundated with outfit ideas from each particular store. Our concept is more about mixin’ it up.

The Swanky Isis provides inspiration for crazy cool fashion, while keeping to realistic budgets and what kid’s like to wear.

“Isis” was the Egyptian goddess known as “Giver of Life”. Although we realize fashion advice will not change the world, we do believe our concept can give life to your fashion sense.
