Avoid Traffic for Holiday Travel

Heather Barnum is a spokesperson for the Utah Department of Transportation and outlines some things to keep in mind.

If you’re planning to travel for the July 24th weekend, there is good news. Construction will shut down on I-15 in Utah County from noon on Thursday, July 22, through 9 p.m. on Monday, July 26. Other projects will be working up to Friday, but will stop before the afternoon commute. We don’t want road construction to delay your play over Pioneer Day weekend.

The main thing that causes delays over holiday weekends is increased vehicles traveling at the same time. Because of this, the best thing you can do to avoid delays while traveling this coming holiday weekend is plan ahead and take advantage of the “Stay an Extra Day” promotions on UDOT’s website.

UDOT has partnered with travel venues and attractions throughout the state to offer discounts and incentives if you extend your summer vacation. Each offer is based on the Thursday or Tuesday surrounding holidays including the Pioneer Day. Offers are also good on Thursday or Monday for any other weekend throughout the summer.

Offers are available for everything from discounted hotel stays to family activity discounts. For a complete list, visit UDOT DOT UTAH DOT GOV and click on the “Stay an Extra Day” button.

If you can’t “Stay an Extra Day” try to avoid peak travel times. The afternoon and early evenings will have the most congestion on Friday for people leaving town and on Saturday and Sunday with people returning home.

There will be a few areas where lane restrictions and lane shifts are in place for the safety of the traveling public. Use caution and give yourself a little extra travel time through the follow areas:

o I-15 through Utah County

o I-15 in North Salt Lake – use I-215, I-80 or Legacy Parkway to avoid congestion in this area if traveling to Days of 47 Parade

o I-15 in South Layton

The best thing you can do is stay informed. There are a number of ways you can do this:

o Interactive maps (Know Where Know Why, I-15 CORE)

o Sign up for email updates at UDOT.Utah.Gov

o Text “UDOT” to 83043

o Twitter and Facebook links on UDOT.Utah.Gov

o CommuterLink for real time traffic
