What’s better than banana bread? Chocolate banana bread!
Dark, rich, and extra chocolaty—this blackout banana bread is the perfect way to use up your ripe bananas! With the same banana-forward flavor and a moist texture, this recipe is a chocolate-lover’s dream.
Dina Driggs shared her recipe for chocolate banana bread.
Start by mashing your bananas until they’re completely liquified. A blender can make this step much quicker and smoother. Once your bananas are ready, beat your eggs until they’re a bright yellow color—this works best when your eggs are at room temperature.
Chocolate Banana Bread

INGREDIENTS
- 5 large very ripe bananas
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup butter (softened)
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips (for topping)
METHOD
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line two loaf pans with parchment paper.
- Mash the bananas until liquified. A blender works well for this.
- Beat the eggs until bright yellow, then add them to the mashed bananas.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cream together butter and sugar for about 4 minutes until fully combined.
- Gradually add the flour mixture and buttermilk, alternating between the two. Start with a little flour, followed by buttermilk, and continue until all ingredients are mixed.
- Fold in 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips. (Not minis!)
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared loaf pans.
- Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the bread rest for 10 minutes before removing it from the pan. While the bread is still warm, sprinkle with mini chocolate chips.
- Allow the bread to cool on a rack for another 5 minutes before peeling off the parchment paper.
This chocolate banana bread is best served fresh, but it can also be stored in an airtight container for several days.
