This adaptive scuba program helps kids with disabilities build confidence.
Scuba diving is a thrilling activity that many people enjoy, but for some, it can be a life-changing experience.
Robin Knight, founder of Just Breathe Adaptive Scuba, shared the mission and impact of this unique program that promotes health and wellbeing through adaptive outdoor recreation.
The Mission of Just Breathe
Robin explained, “Our mission is to promote the health and wellbeing of individuals of all ages in adaptive outdoor recreation by using scuba diving.” The program started as a personal journey for Robin, who has eight children and was looking for ways to strengthen family bonds. As her children grew up, she found a new purpose in adaptive scuba diving.
Empowering Children with Disabilities
Just Breathe Adaptive Scuba works with children who have disabilities, helping them overcome challenges and build confidence. Robin shared, “It’s amazing to work with a child who feels different and slowed down by their disability and then see them feel like a rock star in the water.” Scuba diving allows these children to experience something extraordinary, often making their disabilities disappear underwater.
The Three-Phase Program
The program consists of three phases:
- Experience: Participants try scuba diving for free in a safe and supportive environment.
- Training: If participants are excited to continue, they undergo a training process at their own pace to earn an adaptive scuba certification.
- Adventure: Certified participants get to dive in the ocean, experiencing the full thrill of scuba diving.
Building Confidence and Joy
Robin highlighted the transformative impact of the program, saying, “The confidence and joy it gives these kids is incredible.” By providing these unique experiences, Just Breathe Adaptive Scuba helps children with disabilities feel empowered and capable.
