This is a sacred time of year for many families. As we near Easter Sunday, Christians around the world are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Melanie Burk, a mother, designer, and Easter enthusiast, shared her family’s unique tradition that brings the Easter message to life in her home.
The Last Supper Passover Meal
Melanie’s favorite family tradition is their Thursday Last Supper Passover meal. She explained, “We’ve done this for many, many years and we keep it simple.” The meal typically includes rotisserie chicken, pita, vegetables, and hummus, and is enjoyed on blankets laid out on the ground.
The Significance of the Tradition
The tradition is not just about the food, but about the time spent together discussing the significance of the Last Supper. Melanie shared, “Mostly it’s just about having that time and talking about Christ and talking about how on that Thursday before he died, the thing he wanted most was to be with those who were closest to him and to gather around and to be together.”
Family Bonding
Despite the occasional chaos that comes with family gatherings, Melanie finds beauty in these moments. She said, “It’s always a little bit loud and someone’s always gonna be mad because that’s family life, but it’s always just so beautiful, talking about Christ and making something different than usual and being able to be together.”
The Rewards of Tradition
Melanie reflects on the rewards of seeing her children grow through these traditions. “Every year there’s something else that stands out to them. I think consistently, there’s always someone who’s upset, but then there’s always something really tender,” she noted. These moments of understanding and love for the Savior are what make the tradition special.
The Easter Message
For Melanie, the Easter message resonates deeply. She explained, “I love that Holy Week is such a week of the human experience, right? The darkest of nights to the highest of highs and even periods of waiting. That week for the Savior was so poignant in those human experiences, which we all feel. We all feel the sorrow and the grief and the periods of waiting, and I love that the message of Easter is hope and love.”
Easter Packet
Melanie has designed an Easter packet that families can purchase. She described, “It’s just a packet with a poster and many, many paintings that I’ve gathered from around the world. You can visually see and also have easy, tangible traditions that are simple and doable to make the week memorable.”
