These are back-to-school beauty picks you can both agree on.
Earlier this year, we introduced the concept of the Sephora Kid – preteen girls shopping for makeup at stores like Sephora and Ulta. Now, as these Sephora Kids head back to school, we’re here to help you navigate this new terrain. We’re sharing ways to help your teens feel good about their beauty routine while promoting age-appropriate habits.
Style & Beauty Contributor Megan Moore shared a teen beauty checklist that everyone can agree on. As a mother of a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old, she’s in the thick of it. She emphasized the importance of age-appropriate ingredients and striking a balance between high-end and affordable products.

The Morning Rush
The morning rush can be chaotic. Investing in the right products can help your teen feel good about themselves each day. Sometimes, a more expensive product that excites them about getting ready can be worth the splurge.
“You hope the outside investment translates inside. That’s always your goal,” Megan said.
Skincare
Skincare is a good habit to get into, but do teens need all the active ingredients of fancy things at Sephora? Megan suggested skipping Sephora skincare for this age group. Instead, she recommended the ITK line by Brooklyn and Bailey, known from YouTube.
“It’s not anything that’s too active for young skin. It’s a great, technology driven brand perfect for that age group,” Megan emphasized.
The line is great quality, gender-neutral, and includes everything from cleansers to an acne spray.
Hair Care and Styling
Hair care and styling are also important to help your teens feel confident. Megan recommended a Conair tool that wraps hair for you, making it easy for young girls to style their hair.
“My girls both have these and my youngest one, at 10, was able to master it. It’s really nice because then I don’t have to do her hair in the morning,” Megan said.
It has a timer built in so they won’t scorch their hair. There are also a couple different barrels you can get. Smaller for more of a wave, and bigger for a more bouncy curl.
Megan does recommend the Dae brand hair products. “This is on the splurge-ier side, but it’s going to last you a really long time,” she emphasized.
Two products she likes for teens are the styling cream and taming wand. “The taming wand is the same product, but it’s a little tube. It tames the flyaways,” Megan said. Use it for taming the little baby hairs up front.
Perfume Choices
Perfume choices have evolved from the days of Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works. The current generation is gravitating towards Sol de Janeiro perfumes.
“They keep it in the backpack so they can reapply during the day. Like, it’s a whole thing,” Megan said.
They come out with a new one every month and are a hit with teens.
“Again, they are a little pricier, but they’re plastic bottles. So for perfume, 24 bucks is not too much,” Megan explained.
Makeup Trends
Current makeup trends lean towards a more natural look. Teens are not wearing a lot of makeup. “They’re just kind of enhancing, but it’s not a full face of makeup,” Megan emphasized. Instead, they’re reaching for products that blur and hydrate, giving them a glow.
Lips
Megan loves the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm. “There’s the balm and there’s an oil. You cannot go wrong with either one. Your daughter will be thrilled with this,” she said.
Foundation
“They’re not wearing foundation. They really are not,” Megan emphasized. “Something that’s going to be blurring and hydrating and kind of give them a glow, that’s what they’re reaching for more.”
She recommended Elf Halo Glow for this purpose. “It just goes over the skin and gives you a beautiful glow and kind of evens things out, but it’s not a full foundation,” Megan said.
Blush
She also suggested liquid blush for a beautiful glow. “You could go splurgy on this, but I’m going to recommend a cheaper version,” Megan said. She likes the Hard Candy blushes you can get at Walmart. They’re easy to put on and come in at about $8.
Eyes
Megan said tubing mascara is a great choice for sports-playing girls. “It’s not going to smudge and it’s not going to give them raccoon eyes,” she said. “At the end of the day, they can just take it off with warm water.”
In conclusion, helping your teens navigate their beauty routine can be a rewarding experience. By promoting age-appropriate habits and products, you can help them feel good about themselves while also feeling confident in the choices they’re making.
