Even our relationship expert is still learning.
He’s an expert in his field. He teaches us valuable life lessons every week. Yet, he claims he’s still learning.
Studio 5 Relationship Contributor Dr. Matt Townsend gave us a look into his life as he shared four things his clients taught him last week.
-
Attention Management
“Attention management is the number one needed life skill,” Matt emphasized. In today’s world, distractions are everywhere, and people are hungry for attention. This attention creates viewership, which in turn generates money. Matt pointed out that “attention is such a hot currency,” and stresses the importance of managing our attention to focus on what truly matters.
-
Lasting Happiness
Matt has observed that, “lasting happiness is not generated by accomplishments or wealth.” Many of his successful clients are not happy or healthy because they mistakenly believe that success brings happiness. Instead, research shows that happiness comes from gratitude, appreciation, and being present.
“The happier you are, the more likely you are to be successful,” Matt noted.
-
Acceptance Over Perfection
“Acceptance is better than perfection if you want peace in your life,” Matt advised. He explained that trying to control everything leads to stress and conflict. Instead, accepting things as they are can bring peace.
He quotes the serenity prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
-
Honoring Autonomy
“You cannot strengthen a relationship without fully honoring the other’s autonomy,” Matt asserted. Trying to control someone else will only lead to rebellion and resentment. Instead, we must accept and respect others’ autonomy to build strong, healthy relationships.
