For nearly two decades, Studio 5 has been a creative hub where “some of the best and brightest brains have come together to create what we affectionately and gratefully call TV magic.”
This week, the show honored one of its foundational figures—Michelle Torsak—to reflect on the legacy she built and the culture she cultivated.
The Woman Behind the Curtain
The influence of Michelle Torsak, the original executive producer and creator of Studio 5, is still deeply felt. “This is the house. This is the home that Michelle built 19 years ago,” host Brooke Walker said.
A Culture of Kindness and Collaboration
Michelle emphasized the unique environment she helped foster. “We have always just had amazing teams of mostly women… who just were good to each other.” This culture of support and sincerity has endured, even as team members have changed over the years.
A producer once told Brooke, “I didn’t know that women could… professionally run at this level, and… do it with the values and the characteristics that you described.”
The Vision That Started It All
Before social media and blogs, Michelle envisioned a show that celebrated women as builders of humanity. “Those moments of women building humanity… mostly happen in the kitchen and… in building our relationships.” Inspired by magazines like Martha Stewart Living and Real Simple, she curated a team of contributors who embodied this spirit.
Contributors: The Original Influencers
Michelle handpicked contributors who were “in it for the women watching.” She preferred the term “contributor” over “influencer,” highlighting the authenticity and purpose behind their work. These women brought wisdom, talent, and heart to the screen, shaping the show’s identity.
A Defining Moment: Motherhood Matters
One of Michelle’s favorite memories was the live “Motherhood Matters” show at Hale Center Theater. “Women were lined up around the building like, an hour and a half early, and I started to cry.” The overwhelming turnout confirmed the show’s resonance with the audience.
The Lasting Legacy
“I hope women see their own goodness,” Michelle emphasized. Through everyday contributors and heartfelt stories, the show has uplifted and inspired viewers.
