Running out of ideas for winter activities? Here are five to try.
With current cold weather, we are all kind of sick of being cooped up. But don’t let that boredom creep in. We’re sharing ways to have some fun this winter. From exciting indoor activities to cool outdoor adventures, there are plenty of ways to carve out some time and enjoy the season.
Lisa Stanworth, a travel podcaster who loves exploring with her husband and five kids, shared a few fun ways to break out of your comfort zone this winter.
Indoor Activities
Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolate Tour
This field trip will satisfy your sweet tooth. A visit to Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolate in North Salt Lake is a must. This family-owned company, started in the 1960s, offers a tour for just five dollars. “At the end of the tour, you actually get like a $4 voucher to spend for chocolates,” Lisa said. Her kids loved the little taste tests along the way, including ice cream and chocolate.
You’ll need to make sure to schedule your tour in advance. “ I scheduled it like the day before. So they will have big groups, but the small groups they can accommodate too,” Lisa explained.
Spa Day at Spavia
A spa day at Spavia in Sandy is a relaxing winter escape. Lisa recommended this spot for its customizable treatments. “You get to choose your music, your scent, even if you want the people talking to you or not,” she explained.
Lisa recommended both the massages and facials. “ I think massages are always my favorite, but the facials there are kind of unbeatable,” she emphasized.
Ogden Treehouse Museum
The Ogden Treehouse Museum is a fun and educational outing with the kids. Host Daylan Dove’s boys loved the STEM projects and activities, and she appreciated the cleanliness and organization. “There were lots of people cleaning and sanitizing,” she noted. With ticket prices ranging from $6 to $12, it’s an affordable way to spend an afternoon.
Outdoor Adventures
Winter Hikes
For the outdoor enthusiasts, winter hikes are a refreshing way to enjoy nature. Lisa mentioned this is her first year going on winter hikes, and she has fallen in love with them. “It’s so nice just to be able to go and breathe fresh air,” she described. Some popular spots are Donut Falls and Battle Creek, but be sure to check for avalanche warnings and wear spikes for safety.
Zion National Park
Take advantage of Utah’s Zion National Park. “The weather is ideal for hiking right now,” Lisa said. With fewer crowds and all hikes open, it’s the perfect time to explore.
Just remember to get there early and bring your hiking gear. “ Shuttles don’t run right now, so you have to watch for parking and stuff like that,” Lisa mentioned. “But it’s pretty doable and it’s so nice just to get out there.”
