Get these seed bombs ready for spring flowers!
As we look forward to Spring, we dream of our gardens in bloom. In preparation, we can turn our love for flowers into a fun DIY. Grab your gardening gloves and make your very own seed bombs.
Robyn Chubey is a gardener, photographer, teacher, and all around creative. She shared how to create seed bombs from simple wildflower seeds and clay.
How Clay Seed Bombs Work
Robyn creates a seed bomb from a mixture of seeds and potting soil mix wrapped in a natural earth air-dry clay. The clay, during rainy season or with watering, begins to absorb water, moistening the seeds and soil within, beginning the germination process. By the time to clay softens and melts and starts to join the earth below, the seeds or seedlings within can take root and begin their life.
Using the Right Seeds
Robyn says the key to a successful seed bomb is ensuring that the seeds are suitable to grow in the place they are left, and that there will be water and moisture to release them. It is important to use seeds that are tolerant to your location and are used to your soil and climate, as well as enduring the cold wet springs that will help to release them.
The flower seeds Robyn likes to include are echinacea, wild asters, bee balm, giant hyssop, gaillardia, and rudbeckia. She says you can also find great wildflower mixes of seeds from many local seed companies and at big box stores where seeds are sold.
