Set up cleaning stations! Get organized post-holidays with 4 strategies

Here’s how to get organized in 2025.

If you’re looking to start the new year organized, now is the perfect time to hit reset on your cleaning routine. We’re showing you how to create cleaning habits that keep you on track all year long, and make tidying up feel less like a chore.

Cleaning expert Briana Lybbert, with This Messie Life, shared that just like we set financial goals, we need some household goals too.

The Importance of a Clean Home

Briana emphasized that the home is where the heart is. A clean and organized home creates a peaceful and harmonious environment. “ We really want to be intentional with planning and structuring our home to help encourage that atmosphere,” she said. When our living spaces are cluttered and chaotic, it can be difficult to relax and recharge.

Decluttering: Less is More

One of Briana’s biggest strategies for keeping a clean home is to minimize excess. She said, “Excess weighs us down and weighs down our mental load.” Start by decluttering your closet.

A strategy Briana likes is to put all of your hangers backwards and only switch them around when you wear an item. “ By the end of the year, whichever is still flipped around… it’s time to get rid of it,” she explained.

The kitchen is another place in the house where excess can accumulate. “ We just moved into a new house… and I had accumulated a few spoons. And then, we had more spoons! And I tell you what, no one needs 14 spoons,” Briana said. “ This is an extra mental load you don’t need to keep.” Keep the ones you want and get rid of the rest. This cuts down on clutter and makes it easier to find what you need.

Cleaning Stations

To keep a clean home, Briana suggested setting up cleaning stations. “Having stations around the house under each sink will help you maintain a clean home,” she emphasized. Stock these stations with essentials like Clorox wipes, glass cleaner spray, and disinfectant.

This makes it quick and easy to clean up messes as they happen, keeping your home looking fresh. “ It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s organized. And, there’s something about having a beautifully organized system that makes you want to keep it organized,” Briana said.

Organizing With Purpose

When it comes to organizing, Briana advised against impulsive purchases. “ Do not just run out to Hobby Lobby or TJ Maxx and grab whatever cute bins you can find,” she emphasized.

Invest in storage solutions that fit your needs and space. Briana especially likes to use drawer dividers and clear food storage bins in the pantry. “Measure your spaces, go out and grab what’s good for you, shop around… find good deals… and just start with one thing at a time,” she recommended.

A Year-Long Challenge

Briana encouraged taking on a year-long challenge to organize your home. “Take one room at a time, it can be one room a week, one room a month,  however, you need to do it,” she said. By breaking the task into manageable chunks, you can gradually transform your home into a more peaceful and organized space.
