Customizing Your Home

Do-It-Yourself decorating and small-scale remodeling is the best way to customize the rooms in your home without breaking the bank. Whether you’re new to home design or a DIY design expert, there are plenty of resources available to help you get started on creating a space that is entirely your style.

Chip Wade, the host of HGTV’s Elbow Room is one of those resources and he shares ways to make a quick impact.

The rooms in your home do not have to be large to look impressive. The way you utilize and accent the space you do have is the most important aspect to keep in mind.

Where to start with DIY design

1. Freshen up your walls with a new paint color
Don’t be afraid to liven things up with bright wall colors. A smaller space can appear larger and livelier with a mixture of paint. If you’re a fan of dark walls, try to add brighter accent colors to give your room a boost.

2. Play around with DIY wall art
Can’t find the perfect art pieces for your walls? Make wall art of your own! You can find countless DIY art ideas online. Find a few favorites and try them out. Your projects don’t have to be complex, either. It’s best to start with simple instructions and supplies you’re familiar with and move up from there.

3. Consider open shelving
In a small space, cabinets can appear bulky and take up too much space. You don’t necessarily have to compromise your wall storage to clean up the look of your room. Try open shelving. This is a great way to organize your items, maintain some storage space, and create an interesting addition to any room.

4. Get creative with storage space
You can maximize your square footage with stylish and resourceful organization ideas. Get creative with multipurpose furniture, store unused items under the bed, and include cubbies and floating shelves for extra storage and a neat way to display items. Remember, in a small space, it’s smart to pare down the things in each room before stowing them away.
