Dark winter… or bright spring? Color analysis is back with some fresh updates

Color analysis has come a long way from the 80s and 90s.

We are spotting a major comeback trend, helping women rediscover their confidence. Once seen as a relic of the 80s, the practice of finding your season is popular again. The new and improved version of color analysis is much more specific and detailed than it once was.

Meredith Villalba, a certified personal color analyst, shared why we’re seeing the comeback, and how knowing your colors can benefit you in many aspects of life.

The Revival of Color Analysis

Color analysis was enormously popular in the 80s and 90s, with people carrying around their swatch books. However, the old system of four seasons—autumn, winter, spring, summer—was not comprehensive enough. “My mom actually was analyzed in all four seasons by four different people,” Meredith recalled. Today, color theory has evolved to include 12 seasons, accommodating those with neutral undertones who didn’t fit neatly into the original categories.

Benefits of Knowing Your Colors

“When you don’t understand your personal colors, I remember always feeling like, ‘is this going to work?’ Then once I had my colors done, it was like, boom, the framework,” Meredith said.

Knowing your colors helps you build a cohesive wardrobe, choose the right makeup, and understand why certain trends may not work for you. “Your hair, your skin, your eyes already come together,” Meredith said. “Your natural design already has you just right, so work with that, not against it.”

The Psychological Impact of Colors

Beyond aesthetics, color analysis can actually have a profound psychological effect. Meredith described it as an “inner energy.” She explained, “A lot of people come with preconceived notions about what works for them… and for other people, it’s a real shock. It’s like all of a sudden, they see themselves.” This realization can be powerful, helping women feel seen and understood.

Color Analysis During Transformative Life Stages

Women often seek color analysis during significant life changes. Meredith noted, “I often see people who have recently made lifestyle changes and lost a lot of weight… or women post-pregnancy ready to invest back in themselves.” These transformative chapters make color analysis a meaningful way to celebrate and embrace new beginnings.

The Process of Color Analysis

During a color analysis session, clients are placed in full-spectrum lighting and draped with scientifically calibrated colors. “We make comparisons better worse, better worse. You really don’t know what your best is until you can compare it,” Meredith explained.

Embracing Technology in Color Analysis

Technology is also playing a role in modern color analysis. Meredith mentioned an app developed by True Color International that helps with online shopping by identifying colors that match your palette. “You can online shop, import the website, click the color… and it will pop up and say, ‘this belongs in a light summer palette’ or, ‘this belongs in a true autumn palette,’” she described.

The resurgence of color analysis is more than a trend; it can be a journey of self-discovery and confidence-building. As Meredith beautifully put it, “Every woman is a work of art. They’re already beautiful… it’s just radiating those colors.” Whether during transformative life stages or everyday moments, understanding your colors can be a powerful tool for embracing your true self.
