You don’t need a reason to throw a party! How one woman is redefining girls night

Throw a party any old time!

Who says you need a big reason to throw a party?

Katlyn van Wingerden is redefining how she celebrates friendship, one small gathering at a time. She shared details of what she calls her ‘Monthly Girls Night In’ parties.

Cozy, Intentional Connection

As a first-time mom, Katlyn found that going out became more difficult. “My parties now seem to be more inside rather than outside,” she explained. That’s how her Girls Night In concept was born.

“All of our attire for the girls night in parties are comfy, cozy. Wear your PJs, bring a snack,” Katlyn said. It’s a low-pressure, high-connection way to gather with friends.

The Big and Small Party

One of Katlyn’s most memorable themes was “Bring Your Reason to Celebrate.” She explained, “The reason people could celebrate could be big, it could be small.” From new jobs and pregnancies to starting a garden or getting a new cat, every win was welcome.

“We got to brag about the little things,” she said. Guests even wrote their celebrations on the wall, creating a visual reminder of joy in all its forms.

Inspired by Faith and Community

The idea for the celebration theme came from Katlyn’s work with an international faith-based nonprofit. “We do a praise and prayer report every month,” she shared. “They say, ‘Hey, this is something we need prayer for and this is something we want to praise and celebrate.’” That spirit of gratitude and encouragement carried over into her Girls Night In gatherings.

Keeping It Simple—or Going All Out

Katlyn balances simplicity with creativity. “Sometimes I like… to make whatever you do at home even bigger,” she said. She often thrifts for decor, like a fine china tea set for a high tea party, or hires a local baker for a custom cake.

“Usually I try to keep it around $75,” she noted, proving that meaningful gatherings don’t have to break the bank.
