Drugstore Beauty Buys to Rival Haute Couture for Spring 2011

Even the smaller purchases add up, so we’ve tested and tried all of Spring’s latest bargain beauty buys for you!

Holly Stone shows us how to play into the hottest make-up trends for Spring – at drugstore prices.

Welcome Spring! Welcome Happy! Welcome Health! In my personal opinion, Spring 2011 reveals beauty trends which can revive the spirit and reveal inner wellness. It is the season for recovering an important principle: beauty from the inside out. Whether you are all about punching up your color or remaining elegantly neutral, this season has something for YOU!

Shopping for trend colors can be either an adventure or a disaster. And buying all the colors may not be the best option. Looking for products which perform multiple functions is a better way to get more for your money. Even some of the brands in skin care have teamed up with the Cosmetic industry to bring you the best of both worlds in one product. The best place to find these multi-tasking products? Your local drug store! Below are some cosmetic equivalents to give you more options, at a lesser price.

Juicy Lips

Canteloupe, watermelon, tangerine – all juicy. Now all the rage in lip colors! And most popular in the form of a lip stain. For those with a lighter complexion, opt for the less bold melons. For darker complexion, the bolder the orange-the better.

Trend Feature:

Josie Marin Magic Marker, $19

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

Revlon “Just Bitten” is a lip stain AND a lipbalm. All the colors in this collection fit the Spring 2011 trend

(Target $7.04)

Punched-Up Eyes

Bold is back. But the boldest of the colors should be worn close to the lash line. Fade colors up so that the brightest color is closest to the white of your eye.

Trend Feature:

Kat von D Eyeshadow Palette $34

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

Cover Girl Smoky Shadow Blast-2 sided stick applicator gives you greater precision and allows you to select a couple of the seasonal trends, not ALL of them. Colors shown Citrus Flair, Tempest Blue

(Walgreens $7.44)

Multi-Function Mascara

Mascaras claim to do everything today except fold your laundry and pay your bills. The 2 determining factors of a great performing mascara are 1) its formula and 2) its brush. I have discovered a drug store

mascara that delivers 3) a great price too!

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

Rimmel Day 2 Night Mascara 2 brushes for 2 options with one powerful formula. I LOVE the way Rimmel thinks. (Wal-Mart, $6.99)

On-The-Go Bronze

‘Tis the season to look sun kissed. Many different types of products can give you that bronzed glow from powders, to gels, to lotions and mousses. However, if you have forgotten to wear your tanning cream last night, and you are wearing your spring skirt today, never fear. For a fraction of the cost of body bronzers, a great option for a quick tan is found at your neighborhood Target store.

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

Sonia Kashuk Sunless Tan/Body Towelette (Target $9.99)

Be Cheeky

You have officially been given permission to be cheeky! The bold colors of the lips are translating in a more subdued tone to the cheeks. Cheek jelly, cheek stains, and cheek mousse are all the rage. Want to try them? Opt for the one that does cheeks AND lips AND eyes.

Feature trend:

Givenchy Jelly Blush $33

Tarte Cheek Stain $30

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

Sonia Kashuk Liquid Tint blends easily, can layer color if desired. (Target, $9.99)

Eye Line Simplicity

Trade in the neutral liner for a seasonal color and GO GEL. Plum, blue, green. Explore the options. It is easier than it may look and the end result is FANSTASIC. C’mon, it’s only a little line!!

Feature trend:

Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, $18

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

For a multiple function and easy application, try Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner. It really does glide one, gives you more staying power , and even comes with a great brush!

(Walgreens $6.99)

Perfect Complexion

As a makeup artist, I have often avoided foundation primers because 1) they are too heavy, 2) technology is so advanced that foundation formulas do what they were designed to do. However it is always a challenge to get spring fresh skin with a complexion that is very uneven.

Be still my heart!! Since skin is in, less is more. How do you even out your complexion without applying a lot of foundation? With the NEWEST technology in primer thanks to the union of OLAY and Cover Girl. This delightful serum provides lightweight application, while it smoothes skin’s texture. Powder glides right over the top. AND it’s good for your skin. Now that is music to my ears!

Featured Trend:

Smashbox PhotoFinish Primer, Sephora, $32

Holly’s Drugstore Pick:

Cover Girl and Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer (Wal-Mart, $12.09)
