Eating For Your Body Type

Rachel Jones is a nutritionist at the University of Utah, and she explains which foods are the best energy foods for each body type.


Mesomorphs or Pitta body type tend to have strong bodies and strong digestion

Eat about the same calories for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Include a good balance of whole grains, veggies and lean protein for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Avocados, and fruits in season are great for this body type

Whole grains like rice, oats, whole wheat pasta

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage

Chicken and turkey are great protein sources

A small amount of natural oils added to vegetables to flavor them

Ectomorphs or Vata body type tend to be thin, have drier skin and hair and complain of more irritation from foods and spices

Make breakfast significant

Whole grains like rice, wheat and oats

Heavy, wet, sweet fruits like mangoes, peaches and bananas

Warmer foods that are steamed or cooked settle well

Plenty of good fats and oils from olives, avocados and nuts, and seeds

Steamed and cooked vegetables like pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, zucchini

Meats and dairy products work well with this body type

Spices to warm the flavors of food

Endomorphs or Kapha body type tend to have more body fat and oilier skin

Wild rice, whole grains, oats

Black beans, pinto beans, etc.

Crispy, high water, high fiber fruits like apples, pears, apricots, etc.

Steamed or crisp vegetables

Smaller portions of grilled or steamed chicken or fish

Take a break from heavy, greasy foods and processed fatty meats
