Here are some strategies for emotional resilience.
In a world where emotional challenges are increasingly common, the need for resilience has never been greater.
Lori Johnson, co-founder of Resilience Through Christ, offered a powerful approach to emotional healing rooted in faith. Her program, recently launched on the We Believe app, teaches practical skills to help individuals navigate life’s hardships with strength and hope.
Why Emotional Resilience Matters
“Depression and anxiety are on the rise,” Lori explained. “It seems like almost everyone is being impacted by it in some way.” Emotional resilience—the ability to recover from stress and adversity—is essential for mental well-being. But Lori’s approach adds a unique dimension: faith.
Christ-Centered Skills for Healing
The Resilience Through Christ course teaches specific, data-backed skills that are “centered in Christ, which gives them power.” These tools are designed not just to cope, but to heal deeply by connecting with divine understanding and comfort.
The “Pour Out” Skill: Letting Go to Let God In
One of the core techniques in the course is called “Pour Out.” This two-part skill involves:
- Identifying your feelings
- Pouring them out in prayer
“It is scary and it can be painful,” Lori admitted. “A lot of times we want to just stuff them and hope they’ll go away. But if we really want to heal, we need to dive deeper.”
Using an “iceberg chart,” participants learn to recognize surface-level reactions like anger or avoidance and uncover the deeper emotions beneath. Lori shared her own method: “I normally pull out my computer and I’ll just start typing away… pouring them out in prayer… to someone who really understands better than I do what I’m feeling.”
Making Space for Healing
This process of emotional release creates space for divine comfort. “I continue to find all of the feelings and pour them out… until I’m empty and open and have created space for Him who understands perfectly to pour in His comfort and healing power,” Lori explained.
Replacing Perspectives: Seeing Through Divine Eyes
Another transformative skill taught in the course is “Replacing Perspectives.” Lori described it as shifting from “narrow, limited story perspectives” to “the Savior’s broader, truer, divine perspectives.”
“It’s ditching the tunnel vision for a longer view,” she said. “A more correct, empowered view because it’s real and it’s true.”
