Five Hot Trends in Paper Crafting & Scrapbooking

Chalkboard paper, bottle caps and circus motifs! Those are just a few of spring’s hottest paper -crafting trends!

Creating Keepsakes, Creative Editor, Megan Hoeppner shares her top five paper-craft and scrapbook picks of the season.

#1: Decorative Pins

These fancy fasteners aren’t for hats anymore. Instead, decorative pins are being used to dress up cards and layouts. Many scrapbooking companies have recently released these pretty products, including Maya Road, Jenni Bowlin Studio, Pebbles, Webster’s Pages, Jillibean Soup, and Close to My Heart.

#2: Hand stitching & Twine

This technique is hot, hot, hot right now. A hand sewn element on a scrapbook page or card adds a homespun look and feel to any design. But you don’t have to be savvy with a needle and thread to get this look. Instead, try the Sew Easy tool by We R Memory Keepers, which pierces holes in a variety of patterns and that you can then fill in with a needle and thread for a trendy technique and look. Along with this popular technique, baker’s twine is being used as an element to stitch with, as well as many other things. Baker’s twine is big. Use it to add bright detail to your designs. Look for twine from Whisker Graphics, Jillibean Soup, Pink Paislee, Martha Stewart Crafts, and We R Memory Keepers.

#3: Metal Accents

Metal is making its way back to crafting in a big way. With elements like bottle caps and even tart tins hitting the shelves at local scrapbook stores, metal adds a cool look. Look for bottle caps from companies like GCD Studios, and Maya Road, and check Jenni Bowlin for cute tart tins.

#4: Circus Inspiration

Step right up. This trend takes big inspiration from the big top. With circus inspired fonts, motifs, prints, and patterns, the look and feel of the circus is becoming the star of the paper show. Look for circus-inspired products from Glitz Designs, GCD Studios, Graphic 45, Girl’s Paperie, The Crafter’s Workshop, and Sassafras.

#5: Chalkboard

Chalk this idea up to a creative new approach to paper crafting. With things like chalkboard paper, vinyl, tags, and paint, getting a chalkboard look on scrapbook pages and home decor is easy and fun. Look for products by Canvas Home Basics, Stampin’ Up!, and Tilano.
