Five Products for Growing Green

Darin Engh from Engh Gardens gives five “must-knows” for keeping indoor plants green and growing. This can be quite a challenge, but with these tricks your plant can last through the winter.


1- INDOOR/OUTDOOR Multi-purpose Insect Spray – Keep Plants Pest Free.

a. Controls: Houseflies, gnats, whiteflies, thrips, red spider mites, spiders and others.

b. Application: Shake well before using. Hold container upright and spray from a distance of 12 to 15 inches. Spray until surface is just damp, but not to point of wetness or run-off.

2- Start-N-Grow – Establish Healthy Root System


a. Premium slow released fertilizer designed for use at planting time as well as for use as a maintenance fertilizer to help maintain professional looking plants. Apply every 3-4 months during growing season. The nutrients and nitrogen release only when plants need them. For use on containers indoors and outdoors.

b. Application: Lightly mix into the soil and water in thoroughly at rates listed on bag for different planting situations.

3- Gardener’s Special – High Nitrogen for Over-All Health


a. A highly concentrated plant food ideal for all houseplants. Can be used every time you water. Insecticides and fungicides can be added to the solution to control problems and feed you plants.

b. Application: Soil Application: 1 teaspoon in 1 gallon of water. Foliage Feeding: ¼ teaspoon in 1 quart of water.

4- Water Spray Bottle – Humidity

a. Moisture in the atmosphere is as important to human health and well-being as it is to houseplants. The simplest method of providing humidity for a plant is to mist its leaves regularly. Grouping plants together is also helpful. Plant leaves will catch and hold transpired moisture from neighboring plants.

b. Application: Fill spray bottle with tepid, not cold water. Hold about 12 to 15 inches from plant and mist on top of leaves. Mist until surface is just damp, but not to point of run-off.

5- Indoor Plant Leaf Shine – Clean and Protect Leaves

a. Excellent product to clean and protect leaves on all houseplants, especially those with waxy leaf surfaces.

b. Application: Hold about 10 inches from plant and spray on top of houseplant leaves.
