Flower Power

Horticulturist, Jerry Goodspeed shares his secrets for beautiful flower beds.

5 simple things you can do to improve the look of your landscape:

1. Create colorful focal points

a. Accent the front door.

b. Draw the focus towards a beautiful sight and away from an eye sore.

c. No more than 2 to 4 for a front area.

2. Make and maintain clean edges

a. Like a haircut, it’s the detail that makes it sharp.

b. Use good thick edging material.

c. Can be done by hand, but keep the edge clean and neat.

3. Create a welcome feel in the front yard

a. A bench or strategically placed chair can signal
a welcome feeling.

b. Keep it open around the front door, no large scary shrubs.

4. Create depth

a. Remember, you can use three dimensions, not just two.

b. Pull the landscape toward the street.

c. Create paths that lead to the unknown.

d. Use the person viewing your landscapes imagination. Make them wonder what is beyond what they see.

5. When all else fails, use the mobile landscape.
