Health Watch: CT Scans and Cancer

Dr. Brett Parkinson with Mountain Medical breakdown the risks.

A new study raises concerns about cancer risks associated with radiation exposure from CT scans.

No studies have been done to directly assess the cancer risks associated with CT scans.

In a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers used data from atomic bomb survivors to estimate the radiation risk for people who get c-t scans.

Researchers estimate one-and-a-half to two per cent of cancers in the u-s may have been caused by radiation exposure from a CT scan.

Despite this data the researchers say most scans do more good than harm — but they suggest only using the technology when absolutely necessary.

For example, ultrasound can diagnose appendicitis in children yet many are given CT scans instead.

It’s estimated 62 million ct scans are done in the u-s each year, including 4 million for children.

Experts say close to one-third are not justified by medical need.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR:

• Will the results of this exam affect the type of treatment I receive?

• Are there alternatives, like ultrasound or MRI, which could provide the same diagnostic information?

• What are the risks of not doing the test? Can I just wait?

• Is there research to suggest this test could save my life?

• Is the facility accredited by the American College of Radiology?

• Will I receive the lowest possible radiation dose?
