These are pretty ways to fill in that dead space.
Do you have a spot in your home that has been left bare and empty because you just don’t know what that space needs? From small walls to empty corners behind the couch, every inch of your home has potential to be a stylish moment. With a few key additions, you can turn a forgotten spot in your home into a beautiful area you’ll love and want to spend time in!
Interior Designer Melissa Reynolds shared five ideas to fill those so-called dead spaces.
Always a Tree!
It might feel redundant to talk about adding a tree (since they are everywhere these days) but if you have a dead space, or an empty corner, adding a tree there helps it immensely. Not only does it add texture and interest, but it also adds height. Height is so important in design because you need varying heights in a room to keep it from feeling squatty and flat and to balance everything. Your eye moves seamlessly through the room when you have a variety of heights of objects. Real or fake, there are so many good ones to choose from, too.
Accent Stools & Ottomans
These are Melissa’s favorite things to add to a room because they are so multi-functional. She loves placing them in front of the fireplace if there seems to be dead space there (which tends to be the case in a lot of new builds). They double as seating and get used ALL the time in her house! She loves adding them to small walls, too, when you aren’t sure what to put on a random wall – it’s not big enough for a table, but still needs something. Melissa loves placing a large piece of art above them in this instance. They are also a good placeholder in great room or living room setups when you don’t have room for accent chairs, but still need something to round out the balance of the room.
Floor Lamp or Mirror
These are another great way to add something to take up space, but also bring in functionality. The thing with lighting today… it is a design element on its own. It is so beautiful; lights add so much to a space. There are so many unique and beautiful pieces of lighting, so be sure to choose something that stands out. This also holds the same concept as the tree, it also adds necessary height to a room and makes it feel balanced. Another piece that has the same effect is a floor mirror.
Add an Accent Cabinet
Melissa loves adding small accent cabinets to smaller walls when you need something there, want it pretty, and could use storage. She uses these all the time for smaller walls – throw a beautiful piece of art or a mirror above it with an interesting lamp and you’ve got a beautiful little moment. Again, there are so many unique cabinets out there, choose something pretty and that will stand out in the room. These are also great in dining spaces as they offer storage for anything, especially functional pieces that you don’t want out for all to see every day.
Enhance Dead Spaces With a Small Chair & Art Above
These are great for the places that don’t have room for an actual accent chair (we’re talking about smaller chairs, like dining room size). Melissa loves to place a small chair with two small pieces of art above it. This helps to make the dead space interesting, not overfill it with something too big, but also give the space another option for seating. She likes using textural chairs in this instance – wood, woven, leather. It adds great warmth and then brings it all together with some art hung above.
