What’s better than cake? A cookie cake!
A chocolate chip cookie is the way to any heart. But with a little extra love, you can make it so much more!
Sweet Tooth Fairy Megan Faulkner Brown shared three creative way to give your cookie a romantic remix.
Heart-Shaped Cookie Cake
The first idea Megan shared is a fun twist on a cookie cake, but with a romantic heart shape! You’ll need a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and with a little shaping and frosting, you can easily create a heart-shaped cookie cake.
How to Make It
- Start with your classic chocolate chip cookie dough.
- Roll it out and cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter, or if you’re feeling adventurous, make a large heart shape by shaping the dough by hand on a baking sheet.
- Bake until golden brown and let the cookies cool.
- Layer the heart-shaped cookies with frosting—think a smooth buttercream or a sweet cream cheese frosting. Sandwich the two cookies together, sort of like a layered cake. Go as tall as you want!
- Frost the tops of the cookies with more frosting, creating a festive touch.
Valentine’s Chocolate Chip Cookies
This is a simple way to make the classic chocolate chip cookie feel extra festive. Add a few seasonal supplies to your favorite recipe to make it special.
How to Make It
- Prepare your usual chocolate chip cookie dough.
- Fold in fun, colorful Valentine’s Day sprinkles into the dough—go for reds, pinks, and whites for the perfect Valentine’s look.
- Bake the cookies as usual and let them cool.
For an even sweeter touch, you can add a garnish of more Valentine’s candy—like conversation hearts, your favorite chocolate candy, melted chocolate, or seasonal M&M’s.
Chocolate-Dipped Cookie Dough
For those of us who believe that raw cookie dough is the best part, Megan has a dreamy treat for you: chocolate-dipped cookie dough.
How to Make It
- Start by cutting your cookie dough into small hearts or X’s and O’s using a cookie cutter.
- Melt some chocolate (dark, milk, or white—your choice!).
- Dip the cookie dough shapes into the melted chocolate, coating them generously.
- Let them cool and harden. The chocolate coating will give a crisp outer layer to the soft and gooey dough.
Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies
by Megan Faulkner Brown
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 3 large eggs, slightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 cups milk chocolate chips
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
METHOD
- Preheat oven to a temperature of 350 F°. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add butter and vegetable shortening. Mix on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 1 minute.
- Add brown sugar and white sugar. Cream ingredients together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
- Add eggs, vanilla extract. Mix ingredients together on low speed until they are evenly mixed.
- Increase mixer speed to medium and mix until light and fluffy — about 2 to 3 minutes.
- In a separate large bowl, add flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk dry ingredients together until well combined and gradually pour into the wet mixture—adding a little bit at a time. Mix on low speed until well blended.
- Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
- Add milk chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Mix together on low speed until chips are well dispersed throughout the dough.
- Form the dough into round balls either by using a cookie scoop or rolling them into a 1/2 cup sized portion. Ideally, chill the dough balls for 30 minutes–if you have the time and/or patience to do so. If not, that is just fine.
- Place dough balls on prepared baking sheet–leaving space between the dough balls to allow for spreading.
- Bake the cookies for 12 – 15 minutes or until lightly browned and almost set. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Store cookies in an airtight container/bag at room temperature for a few days or in the freezer for a few weeks.
