Making “Cents” of Spring Style

Don’t hand over the credit card until you know that your spring wardrobe purchase costs you just pennies per wear.

Becki Crosby, personal stylist at Whippy Cake, says a simple calculation is key to stretching your budget and staying style-current.

First, consider that every outfit should have three tiers of clothing:

· An investment piece that costs more money but lasts longer.

· A secondary piece that changes up the look of an outfit but doesn’t cost too much.

· A trendy piece – something like a necklace that might only be in style this year but costs less than $10-15.

Outfit 1 – Investment piece is a pink dress from Target for $24.99 (.71 cents per wear twice a month, 8 months a year for 2 years), secondary piece is floral cardigan from Forever21 for $15.80 (.32 cents per wear twice a month for 2 years), trendy piece is necklace from H&M for $12 (.33 cents per wear, 3 times a month for 1 year).

Outfit 2 – Investment piece is the polka-dot denim from the Gap for $50 (.48 cents per wear once a week for 2 years), secondary piece is the lace top from H&M for $17.95 (.74 cents per wear, twice a month for 1 year), trendy piece is peach button down top from H&M for $12.95 to wear under the lace top (.53 cents per wear, twice a month for 1 year).

Outfit 3 – Investment piece is polka-dot top from Target for $20 (.65 cents per wear, twice a month for 2 years), secondary piece are printed leggings from Forever21 for $8.80 (.62 cents per wear twice a month for 7 months), and trendy piece is a skinny belt from Cents of Style for $9.54 (.37 cents per wear, twice a month for 1 year).

Outfit four – Investment piece is mint skinny jean from Target for $25 (.24 cents per wear, once a week for 2 years), secondary piece is button down polka-dot top from Forever21 for $15.80 (.65 cents per wear, twice a month for 1 year), and trendy piece is a chunky tear drop necklace from Cents of Style for $14. 94 (.41 cents per wear, 3 times a month for 1 year).
