Nashville-Style Hot Chicken

You can make the famous Nashville hot chicken at home!

Spicy, hot, and a little bit sweet! That’s what we love about this Southern Hot Chicken recipe. If you have ever lived in the south, you likely have tried Hot Chicken. Now, you can make this flavorful fried chicken in your kitchen at home.

Nettie Frank shares the three steps to building and layering the flavor. First, we marinate the chicken in a homemade marinade for up to 24 hours. This step will help tenderize the chicken, and season it well before we bread it. Up next, the breading. The breading step will ensure that hot and sweet flavoring as promised, as well as the crispiest fried chicken skin. Finally, the sauce! The sauce is what takes this recipe over the top Butter hot sauce, sweet and sour sauce, and brown sugar mixed will result in the most delicious sticky sauce.

Hot Chicken

Ingredients

Marinade: 4-24 hours

  • 2 -3 Pounds raw chicken (Drumstick or tenders)
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. Paprika
  • 2 tsp. Kosher Salt
  • 1 tsp. Onion powder
  • 1 tsp. Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. Chili powder
  • 1 tsp. Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. Red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp. Chopped parsley
  • 1/2 tsp. Chopped Oregano

Egg Wash and Breading

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 T. Hot sauce
  • 2 T. Sweet n Sour Sauce
  • 1 3/4 cup AP Flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp. Kosher Salt
  • 1/2 tsp. Black pepper

Sauce

  • 1 T. Hot Sauce
  • 1 T. Melted Butter
  • 1/4 cup Sweet n Sour sauce
  • 1 tsp. Cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Red pepper flakes
  • 1 T. Brown sugar
  • 2 T. Chopped Parsley
  • 1 T. Shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Place raw chicken and all marinade items in bowl or ziplock bag, for at least 2 hours to 24 hours.
  2. Heat up 2 quarts of vegetable oil. Using a candy or meat thermometer until it reaches 375 degrees.
  3. Get egg wash and breading bowls ready. For egg wash combine egg, buttermilk, hot sauce and sweet n sour sauce, using a whisk to combine.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and pepper.
  5. Using gloves or tongs remove one piece of raw chicken place in flour mixture and then into the buttermilk mixture, back into flour mixture. Now place that piece of chicken into hot oil. Cool for 15 minutes.
  6. Remove fried chicken and place on a paper towel lined plate. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on hot chicken and then the sauce.
