Alison Russell, with the Folklore Bookshop in Midway, shared some beautiful children’s books to add to your Christmas collection.
Let It Glow
This middle-grade chapter book by Marissa Meyer and Joan Levy is a fun twist on the holidays with a “Parent Trap” spin. Alison noted, “It’s a great opportunity to discuss different perspectives on how to celebrate the holidays.” It also touches on adoption and blending families.
Holy Night and Little Star
Written by Mitali Perkins and illustrated by Khoa Le, this book tells a unique perspective of the nativity story through the eyes of Little Star. “ It’s all about Little Star and how she’s kind of shy and kind of unsure of her role in this in the nativity event,” Alison explained. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is a fresh take on the traditional.
We Celebrate the Light
This book beautifully illustrates several winter holidays, including Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas. It highlights how light is celebrated during the dark winter months and emphasizes unity and community. “It’s a beautiful opportunity to see how love and light really unites us all as families and as people in the community,” Alison said.
Christmas at Hogwarts
A favorite among Harry Potter fans, this book features excerpts from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” with illustrations by Ziyi Gao. It has a manga, anime feel and is a treat for parents who grew up with the series to share with their kids.
The Christmas Snow Globe
This is a story of siblings Lucy and Noah, who get a Christmas snow globe. “There’s no snow outside, so they get to use the Christmas snow globe as a way to think about all those fun wintry activities,” Alison explained.
“The illustrations are really striking,” she mentioned, and the story ends with a nice little surprise.
The Grumpus and His Dastardly Dreadful Christmas Plan
For fans of “The Grinch,” this chapter book is fun for everyone. “ I really love this as a way to read together as a family,” Alison said. The Grumpus’s plan to spoil Christmas is disrupted in a heartwarming story. It is a chapter book, but there are some fun illustrations included too.
Santa’s First Christmas
Written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Sydney Smith, this picture book is about Santa enjoying the season with the help of elves and animals at the North Pole. “ Sometimes when we, especially as moms, have so much to get done during Christmas, do we really take time to enjoy the season?” Alison noted. It’s a reminder to take time to enjoy the holiday season amidst the hustle and bustle.
