An oversized button down is really easy to style.
The big button down shirt is having a huge moment in fashion right now… and you know we’re here for it. This oversized fit can help you look effortlessly chic and feel comfortable at the same time!
Studio 5 Style & Fashion Contributor Casey Matheny shared five different ways to style that oversized button down top.
Easy Casual Look
Casey suggested starting with an easy casual look. Pair your oversized button down with Bermuda shorts or linen shorts.
“A really easy white button down, any white top underneath, and then just linen shorts,” she said. This combination is perfect for transitioning from summer to fall, giving you an extra layer for cooler mornings and evenings while keeping the color palette light and airy.
Dressy-Casual Juxtaposition
Another combination to try is dressy-casual. Casey recommended pairing the button down with a skirt or sequined pants.
“We’re adding this juxtaposition of dressier and more casual with the button up,” she explained. Tuck in the oversized shirt and play with colors that don’t necessarily match, but complement each other. Finish the look with casual sneakers to keep it grounded.
Half Tuck With Jeans
The classic jeans and white button down combo gets a modern twist with the half tuck. “Instead of leaving it all the way tucked or untucked, we’re doing the half,” Casey advised. “Tuck the most inner side, so the one that lays closest to your body.” Add a belt to show off your waist and choose between flats, for a casual look, or heels to go dressier. This versatile outfit can easily transition from day to night.
Double Denim
Embrace the double denim trend by treating your oversized button down as an extra layer. “We’re going to button it all the way down and just treat it like a jacket,” Casey suggested. You can wear it open with a tank or tee underneath, or button it up for more polish.
Add intentional accessories to make the outfit feel thoughtfully put together. “Really accessorize it to be like, ‘This is intentional. I’m not just wearing oversized clothes… I thought about this,'” Casey advised.
Classic Black and White
Finally, Casey highlighted the timeless appeal of a button down with black pants. “When you are doing two really high contrast colors, focus on the more grounding color, which would be black,” she advised.
Ground the look with black shoes and a black bag, and consider adding a third piece, like a jacket. “I call it the magic third. It also helps to pull it together, but it’s simple,” Casey explained.
