Brian Lloyd, with Olson’s Greenhouse, shared his favorite colorful varieties that come together for a perfect masterpiece.
RED
Verbena Firehouse Red by breeder – Ball FloraPlant
So many people have different ideas of red, but this flower is Brian’s idea of the color. “It brings out that deep, true, scarlet red,” he emphasized. “To me, this is what epitomizes red.”
ORANGE
Calibrachoa Cielo Orange by breeder – Greenfuse
“I like this color of orange because it’s got a lot of different shades of orange,” Brian said. This variety will be released next year.
YELLOW
Coreopsis Solanna Sunset Burst by breeder – Danziger
Yellow is probably the most common accent in the flower world.
“This flower has more of a golden yellow, which I typically prefer in my yellow flowers,” Brian said. “It’s that bright color that lasts all summer long.”
GREEN
Coleus TerraScape Solar Fire by breeder – Kientzler
“Green is making a comeback in the flower world, especially in the world of coleus,” Brian said. “I just love the texture more than anything.” These plants are great for shade and sun.
BLUE
Petunia Easy Wave Sky Blue by breeder – PanAmerican Seed
“Blue pigments don’t exist in nature, especially in flowers,” Brian explained. “Actual blue colors are usually more lavender.”
INDIGO
Scaevola Blue Brilliance by breeder – Ball FloraPlant
“This is called a fan flower because it’s got those five fanning out blooms or petals on each flower,” Brian explained. It’s a great summer flower that will bloom all season.
VIOLET
Petunia Tumbelina Sophia by breeder – Kerley
This flower has excellent weather resistance, and is medium to early flowering. It’s very fragrant, so it can be a nice addition to your flowerbeds.
